The landscape for language professionals is rapidly evolving as U.S. government entities increasingly explore and implement AI-driven interpretation and translation solutions. This webinar will provide a critical overview of recent legislative developments, focusing specifically on groundbreaking proposals in Ohio and Wisconsin, and examine the broader implications from the perspective of the US Department of Justice.
We’ll delve into Ohio’s Supreme Court’s proposed rules, which cautiously permit generative AI for non-substantive court information while explicitly prohibiting its use for interpretation in substantive legal proceedings or for translating critical legal documents that impact constitutional or civil rights. This nuanced approach reflects an acknowledgment of AI’s potential while prioritizing accuracy and the protection of individual rights.
In contrast, we’ll analyze Wisconsin’s more expansive proposed legislation, which seeks to allow “machine-assisted translation” and interpretation systems, potentially even replacing human interpreters in both civil and criminal cases. We will discuss the concerns raised by language professional organizations regarding the bill’s vague language, lack of robust oversight, and the critical need for human oversight in high-stakes legal contexts.
Furthermore, we’ll examine the evolving stance of the US Department of Justice on AI in the legal system. We’ll analyze the proposed changes by the current US administration to codify English as the official language and to reduce language access for LEPs.
This webinar is essential for language professionals seeking to understand the legislative currents, advocate for their crucial role, and prepare for a future where human expertise and AI capabilities increasingly intersect. Join us to discuss the challenges, opportunities, and ethical considerations inherent in this transformative era.
